MOD Marine Infrastructure & Dredging

Background

The MOD has an array of facillities to support their naval capability.  This requires regular maintenance and upgrade of the infrastructure, which needs specialist marine plant.

Scope of Works

The installation of a new services via dedicated underwater pipework was to be carried out together with maintenance dredging to maintain water depth for submarine activity.

Solution

Mounted on the CW4 flat topped barge, the CAT 365 long reach fitted with a pole grab was deployed to work at depths of around 25 metres. A clamshell grab was used for the dredging and a rock grab used for backfill and scour protection, with depth controlled using a computer system. The remoteness of the locations led to various weather challenges along the way during the placement of a long underwater service duct, but all works were successfully completed.  Critical to the success was the alignment of the service trench, which was achieved using tug boats and crew, together with WM Plant Hire's experienced operator, monitoring line and level with a dig profile computer.
