Underwater Excavation: Bank Street, Canary Wharf


A massive development in Canary Wharf will maximise the space available in the heart of London by reclaiming water filled docks. This will see high rise buidling as part of a multi-purpose development which requires extensive piling and foundation works.  The site represents one of central London's largest privately owned development sites extending to 22 acres and is recognized as being of major importance on a local, national and international level.

Scope of Works

Commercial Marine & Piling have secured the cofferdam and infill contract to reclaim land from the existing dock basin.  WM Plant Hire have been involved since the early stages to specify the right machine and method of removing underwater obstructions to enable the piling works to proceed.  A working depth of around 18 metres is required with removal of concrete, timber and brick structures anticipated.


Working with CMP for many years has allowed a good understanding of the challenges faced.  A 70 tonne machine with 25m reach capable of handling hydraulic attachments was selected in conjunction with a dig monitoring system to tackle the obstructions.  The right approach, skilled operators and correct work tool selection proved critical to the success of the project.  Removal of underwater obstructions was a key task to getting the development underway, with the piling works completed on time.
