Sand Extraction From Underwater Lagoon

Background

Removal of sand using cutter suction dedgers left isolated areas of this quarry with material to be excavated prior to landscaping.

Scope of Works

Sand material lying up 8m below water had to be excavated and stockpiled to ensure that the area was fully exhausted of material prior to backfilling.

Solution

A 45 tonne long reach excavator with 22m reach was used to dig the material from the bankside.  Fitted with an electronic dig monitoring system, the operator was able to remove the material accurately and avoid any undercutting of the bank slope.  Minimising the slew angle of the machine enabled a high level of productivity by reducing the bucket cycle time of digging and unloading.
