Standish Cutting Reprofiling

Background

Detailed inspections of the rail network identified a need to stabilise a section of the cutting on the Cross country route between Bristol and Birmingham.   With past flooding in the Gloucestershire area, earthworks prone to landslips have been monitored for many years.

Scope of Works

A  major earthworks scheme was developed to stabilise the rail embankment at Standish Cutting after the movement of the slope.  Re-profiling and additional slope drainage were required.  Minimal disruption to the rail services was stipulated.

Solution

WM Plant Hire supplied 2 extra long reach machines, CAT 345 and CAT 385 long reach excavators, able to provide the 25 to 30 metre reach necessary for the re-profiling works without affecting train operation.  Fitted with a compactor plate the backfill material could be compacted safely and efficiently.
