Background
Following heavy rainfall in Kent there was a landslip on the South Eastern line between Sittingbourne and Gillingham adjacent to the tracks causing line closure and disruption to services. Network Rail and Balfour Beatty and their team of subcontractors mobilised, working 24/7 to deliver 62m of sheet piled wall pre-augured, ground investigation, removal of 1000 tonnes of slipped clay, placement of 1000 tonnes of engineering fill and 329m of track drainage.
Scope of Works
WM Plant Hire were employed by Van Elle to assist with the removal of clay, reprofiling and backfill operations.
Solution
Our powerful CAT 340 machine was deployed with an extension arm to meet the weight restrictions on the embankment but achieve the necessary reach required to remove the slipped material. The same machine was then used for the back fill operations.
A smaller 7m long reach was also used for further back fill operations in areas where the other machine was unable to reach.
