Deep excavation works to A500 highway scheme in Staffordshire

The upgrading of the A500 trunk road includes the diversion of the watercourses under two roundabout interchanges. Site restrictions demanded the use of specialist long reach equipment for elements of the construction.

Scope of Works

Tunnels and deep culverts were constructed to provide a new route for the river. Due to the depth of excavation the use of a temporary support structure or “cofferdam” was required.

WM Plant Hire provided 17m and 22m long reach excavators to dig between the cofferdam supports from ground level. The extended reach allowed for the material to excavated in remote areas of the site together with the ability to dig down in one operation. This avoided the need for temporary access ramps and earthworks. The versatility of the machines for lifting, loading and excavating was proven by the variety of tasks completed.

WM Plant Hire’s specialist long reach plant demonstrated the benefits over the use of standard machines. The operators proactive approach to safety ensured that the machines were maintained to a high standard on site.
